Nitrous Oxide
Many people are calm, comfortable and confident in a dental office and a gentle and caring approach is enough to make them feel comfortable for dental treatment. However, others may feel anxious before or during treatment and nitrous oxide can be used as a safe and effective means to calm a child’s/ adult’s fear as well as to enhance effective communication.
What is Nitrous Oxide?
Nitrous oxide is a blend of two gases – oxygen and nitrous oxide. It is a colourless, non-irritant gas with a slightly sweet smell. It is administered with a fitted mask that is placed over the nose and as the patient breathes, the uptake of the nitrous oxide occurs through the lungs. The concentration of gas is adjusted by the dentist to suit the need of the patient. It is quickly eliminated from the body as soon as it stops being administered and has no lingering effects.
